Moeen receives off-spin advice from Swann
7:00am Tuesday 24th June 2014 in Sport
MOEEN Ali says he is happy to consult former England spinner Graeme Swann who has been approached to work with the country’s up-and-coming spinners.
The Worcestershire all-rounder has already had words of advice from Swann who retired from international cricket mid-way through the winter Ashes series in Australia.
Moeen boosted England’s victory hopes with the wickets of Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Headingley.
He said: “”When Graeme Swann comes down, I try and speak to him here and there. Why not? He’s been one of best off-spinners in world for the last seven or eight years.
“I’ve spoken to him and he tries to give me lots of confidence. He’s told me to just enjoy it and enjoy playing for England all the time.”
Moeen dismissed Sangakarra for the second time in the series after claiming his first Test wicket at his expense in the first Test at Lord’s.
He said: “It was nice to get him, he’s one of my heroes as a batsman.
“I was just trying to bowl as straight as I could to Sangakkara and bowl a dot ball really.
“He’s taken me down a couple of times already but I am just trying to do a job for the team and thankfully it came off.
“It was nice to contribute to the side, to bring us back into the game because Sri Lanka were playing really well at the time and to do it in that way was great.”
Moeen has been working hard at New Road with Saeed Ajmal on perfecting his doosra delivery and he produced it at international level for England for the first time yesterday.
He said: “Yeah, I bowled one. I was feeling pretty confident at the time so I thought ‘why not?’ “It’s the first one I’ve bowled (for England). I just wanted to do a job for the team first because I’m not as confident with the red ball as I am with the white ball.”
