WORCESTER Wolves have moved quickly to replace star centre Will Creekmore with fellow American Robert Thurman.

Creekmore, runner-up to Zaire Taylor in both the Wolves and British Basketball League Most Valuable Player rankings last season, has opted not to return to the University Arena in pursuit of a career elsewhere in Europe.

The league’s top rebounder last term was on a scholarship at the university and has now finished his studies.

But the towering centre recommended Thurman to Paul James and the Worcester director of basketball has signed the 6ft 10ins player.

The 25-year-old played his college basketball at University of California Golden Bears, where he earned a reputation as a hard-nosed competitor.

More recently, he has plied his trade with Falcon Basketball Club in Denmark, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per outing.

“He has a tough act to follow in Will, but I’m confident that he will do just that,” James said. “Will brought Robert to my attention and he should know what it takes to be successful in the BBL.

“I’m delighted to have Robert on the Wolves’ roster this season and very much look forward to working with him.”

Thurman added: “I am excited to play for a club that does not accept mediocrity; a club where winning is everything.”

Thurman’s arrival comes after captain Alex Owumi and Jamal Williams re-signed for the 2014-15 campaign.

But Worcester are still seeking a replacement for MVP Taylor after the influential point guard rejected a new deal to instead join London Lions.

Wolves are bidding for another season of success after landing the BBL Trophy and play-offs in 2013-14.
