DANNY Jackman says Worcester City was always a club he intended to have on his curriculum vitae.

The 31-year-old is following in the footsteps of his grandfather Bill in pulling on the blue and white of his hometown shirt.

However, the midfielder admits he would rather that honour had come at St George’s Lane, rather than City’s temporary base at Aggborough.

Bill Jackman scored 43 goals in 121 appearances for City from 1947 to 1953, going on to become part of the backroom team at the Lane.

But, following the famous old ground’s demolition for housing last year, Jackman junior’s dream of gracing the same turf as his grandad disappeared.

“Playing at Kidderminster takes a little bit of the shine off it for me,” he said.

“With my grandad playing for Worcester previously it would have been nice to play at St George’s Lane but it’s great to put on the shirt and play for my hometown club.

“It was something that I always wanted to do later on in my career and I’m pleased to be here.”

Jackman was a surprise addition to Carl Heeley’s squad during the summer following his release from Kidderminster Harriers.

Having played more than 300 times in the Football League, the pint-sized midfielder might have appeared out of reach for the Conference North outfit.

But Jackman says he is relishing the opportunity to continue his career in the part-time arena and feels the move has come at the right time.

He said: “I’ve got two young kids now so my career is around them now and it fitted in perfectly to what I wanted to do and wanted to try to achieve.”

Jackman has been joined in the squad by fellow former Harriers Nick Wright, who scored both goals in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Stalybridge Celtic, and David McDermott.

Allied to a burgeoning group of young talent, Jackman reckons the signs are good for the season ahead.

“We’ve got a lot of new players in the team so it’s all about gelling and it’s going to take a couple of weeks but the initial thoughts are that it’s quite positive,” he said.

“The early signs are really good and encouraging.

“We’ve got a great blend of experience and youth now and there are strong lads on the bench ready to come on and inject that bit of energy.

“It’s positive and we’re hopeful that we’ll have a good season.

“It’s a lovely pitch at Aggborough and the way we want to play is to get the ball down and move it around and we’re only going to get better over the next few weeks.”
