HEAD of rugby at King’s School Jonny Mason says the form book will go out of the window in tonight’s annual Modus Challenge Cup battle against Worcester rivals Royal Grammar School at Sixways (7pm).

King’s School, captained by winger Ryan Kerley, will start as firm favourites to regain the trophy after winning six of their eight matches this term.

Holders RGS have had a mixed opening to the campaign, picking up three wins and suffering four defeats from seven games.

Mason said: “We have made an excellent start but it will be a different kettle of fish tonight and a different kind of match for the boys to play in. The match is very much a one-off.

“We had a very young side last year and quite a few of the guys played last year. It’s always an incredible experience and one that will stay with them.

“The game can attract between 2,000 and 2,500 spectators, so that’s a challenge for players.”

A second-half try fromHarry Bee helped RGS to a 15-8 win over their city rivals 12 months ago.

RGS spokesman Rachel Edwards said: “With 11 first team players leaving the school at the end of last season, the focus has been on developing new players and combinations across the team.

“This is a young side, with five year 11 players in the squad.

“There is considerable ability in the team, however, and while results ahead of the Modus Cup indicate that RGS are the underdogs, it does look like a number of injured players, including the captain Will Tromans, will be returning to bolster the side.”

She added: “Everyone in sport knows that form goes out of the window in derby matches and our players are looking forward to the chance to play at Sixways and show people what they are truly capable of.

“After a strong start to the season, a convincing performance and win over a spirited Shrewsbury side last Wednesday heralded a return to form.”

She added: “It provides genuine hope that the underdogs can overturn the form book and retain the Modus Challenge Cup.”
