MANAGER Carl Heeley says Worcester City want to make up for previous FA Cup heartache by finally reaching the first round proper.

The Blue and Whites have fallen at the final qualifying hurdle in each of the past two seasons, coming within 13 minutes of beating Lincoln City last season, before drawing 1-1 and losing the replay, and conceding in the final minute against Bromley in 2012.

A penalty shoot-out replay defeat to Basingstoke Town also denied them a trip to Chesterfield in 2006, the year after they played Huddersfield Town in the second round.

But tomorrow City will be aiming to be on the right end of the result when they host minnows Greenwich Borough (3pm).

Heeley said: “We have had heartbreak in the last two seasons at Bromley and having it snatched from us against Lincoln, and we have to learn from that.

“They are enjoyable games to play in and the matches I played in the FA Cup I remember fondly and they are great memories.

“But you have got to be greedy and want to get as many as you can, and our next opportunity is tomorrow.”

City, however, will be wary of a Greenwich side enjoying a rich vein of form and keen to spring a surprise. Borough, who play three levels lower than Worcester in the Southern Counties East League, are currently on an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Among the five matches they have won to reach the fourth qualifying round was a 5-2 victory over Sussex County League Division One outfit St Francis Rangers, in which striker Lewis Wood scored all of his side’s goals.

Heeley added: “It’s a game that we are going to be favourites for and it’s all about us focusing on ourselves and getting our own preparations right.

“But we have to respect the fact that they are an ambitious club with some decent backing and want to climb the pyramid. They have won 11 games on the bounce and have won five to get to this stage.

“All we are trying to do is focus on Worcester City, treat the game professionally and not be complacent. If we do we have got a good chance of progress.”

Nathan Vaughan is fit to return but Heeley expects to have a new keeper registered to avoid a repeat of last Saturday’s dramatic scenes against Harrogate Town.

City won the Conference North match 2-0 with goals from Nick Wright and Jordan Murphy but defender Wayne Thomas had to take over in goal after Jose Veiga suffered a knee injury.

A decision on striker Mike Symons’ ankle injury will be taken prior to kick-off but winger Tristan Dunkley could be involved following a shoulder injury.
