WORCESTER City are gearing up for their FA Cup second round match at Scunthorpe United next month.

While not a so-called glamour tie, the fixture has again created interest in the City, who stunned 1987 winners Coventry City 2-1 in the first round on Sunday.

Here are 10 things you might not have known about Scunthorpe.

1. The town of Scunthorpe is situated in North Lincolnshire and is 150 miles from Worcester.

2. It has a population of 73,000 and is the largest steel processing centre in the UK.

3. City’s second round opponents were formed in 1899 and play at Glanford Park, where they moved in 1988 from the Old Showground.

4. They are managed by former Manchester United striker Mark Robins, who was part of the Red Devils’ 1990 FA Cup-winning side – Sir Alex Ferguson’s first piece of silverware as United boss.

5. Scunthorpe United were one of four clubs to join the Football League for the 1950-51 season when the competition expanded to 92 clubs.

6. Worcestershire all-rounder Sir Ian Botham played 11 games for Scunthorpe in 1980, while fellow New Road legend Phil Neale also played for The Iron, his hometown club. Neale also played football for City.

7. Former England manager Graham Taylor, famous for his “Do I Not Like That” catchphrase, grew up in Scunthorpe.

8. Another ex-England boss, Kevin Keegan, spent five years at The Old Showground, making 124 appearances between 1966 and 1971, scoring 18 goals.

9. Liverpool and England goalkeeping legend Ray Clemence started out at Scunthorpe, playing 48 times before being signed by Bill Shankly, moving to Anfield in 1967.

10. Actress Sheridan Smith, who starred as Cilla Black in ITV’s recent biopic of the entertainer, studied at the town’s Joyce Mason School of Dance.
