DROITWICH put in a spirited performance to narrowly lose 22-16 against unbeaten Midlands Two West (South) leaders Old Laurentians.

Laurentians started in command, heaping pressure on the home side’s defence. But to their credit, Spa didn’t give in and kept the visitors at bay for 20 minutes before OLs eventually scored under the posts after a charge-down in midfield.

Droitwich started to make attacks of their own and a great burst of pace by Sam Davenport saw him go close.

Spa were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Nick Godfrey broke off the back of the scrum to beat one man and then find a neat inside pass to Russ Brown to score in the corner with Bobby Scott-Walker converting.

Scott-Walker then added another two penalties from considerable distance to put Droitwich ahead at the interval.

With the pitch getting heavier, the visitors’ fitness levels in the second-half helped them out with Laurentians scoring in the corner.

This was followed by a long-range Scott-Walker penalty for the hosts. However, a lapse of concentration from the young Spa side allowed the visitors to score another try and also a penalty.

Despite gallant runs from Gregor Macleod and Chris Danks, Droitwich could not find the breakthrough to win the game, but they can take great credit from a game where, for 60 minutes, they looked the most likely team to win. They now need to keep this form going.
