TYLER Weir is closing in on a Worcester City return and the possibility of him playing against Barrow tomorrow (3pm) has not been ruled out.

The influential left-back has been sidelined since breaking his foot in the 1-0 home defeat to Bradford Park Avenue on January 11.

He has returned to training but until last night’s session had not been involved in a practice match scenario.

City have Southport loanee Jonathan Lynch to call on at left-back but when asked if Weir could be fit for the weekend, assistant manager Matt Gardiner said: “Let’s see how he comes through Thursday but he’s twisting and turning and striking a ball which is good.

“We just need to get him into a training match situation and see how he goes from there.”

Worcester are looking to bounce back from Tuesday’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Fylde, who leapfrogged Barrow to go top of Conference North on goal difference.

But the Cumbrians also have the title in their sights and arrive at Aggborough as the division’s in-form side on their travels with four wins and two draws from their last six matches away from Holker Street.

City, though, will take confidence from the fact they defeated the Bluebirds 3-0 at Aggborough in the FA Trophy third qualifying round in November.

Gardiner said: “The one thing I can say about the players is they’ve got big hearts and we’ve seen that all season. We’ve seen them have this type of performance before (against Fylde) and bounce back.

“I thought the goals were a bit sloppy for all that Fylde did do but we’ll get ready for another go against Barrow.”

City don’t have much room from manoeuvre when it comes to selection, however, with midfielders Danny Jackman (ankle) and Connor Gater (groin) still out along with keeper Nathan Vaughan (foot).

Centre-half Aaron Brown serves the last of his two-match ban but defender Shabir Khan still has three more to sit out.

But Sean Geddes’ suspension has not started and fellow forward Michael Taylor was back on the bench against Fylde following a hamstring injury.

Dean Waldron is set to keep his place in midfield, while academy colleagues Jamie Smith and Joao Sousa, who play in defence and midfield respectively, could be retained after both appeared as second-half substitutes in midweek.

Gardiner said: “We’ve got some good young players that hopefully will do well.”
