LEOMINSTER matchman Frank Dixon topped the magic ton' when he won the popular Martin Little Memorial contest, held on reserve venue Brockamin due to the river Severn proving unfishable.

With the event, known locally as Sid's Match', attracting an excellent turn-out, it was the rarely-used top lake which provided all the leading weights.

Drawn on peg 33 towards the neck of the pool, Dixon continued an excellent run on the fishery when he offered pellet bait well across to the far bank by using 16 metres of pole.

He was rewarded with around 25 carp, with the biggest around 8lb, from the 4ft-deep swim which together pulled the scales down to a hefty 100-10-0 winning total.

Runner-up was Arbo AC man Dennis Yeomans who also took a huge net of fish, this time from peg six going 70-4-0. Red maggots again offered at 16 metres produced 11 carp for Yeomans, whose net included two double-figure specimens.

Making a rare appearance at Brockamin was stillwater expert John Starkey who claimed third place with an excellent catch of small carp, going 55-11-0, which came to pellet on peg nine.

In fourth spot was John Newton (Redditch), weighing 55-9-0 from the margins on peg 12.

The best weight from the bottom lake was taken by Chris Newton (Redditch) who weighed in 37-0-0.

Amazingly, after 12 rounds of the Moorlands Farm Winter League, two teams are tied for first place and it meant a countback to decide the overall winners.

This year's title went to the Top Four team who scored 20 points along with a weight total of 1,388lbs.

Runners-up were Daiwa Gordon League, also with 20 points and a 1,268lbs total, and in third place came Leftovers with 29 points.

Individually, Bromsgrove's Steve Harris (SBS) took the honours with 45-10-0 of carp, all taken on corn from the margins of peg eight on Meadow pool.

Lee Richards (Top 4) claimed second prize with 43-6-0 to beat Shakespeare's Neil McKinnon who weighed in a third-placed 35-3-0.

Best team on the day were Leftovers with eight points in front of DGL who scored 10.

Sunday's Open contest attracted 21 anglers to a rover' contest on all pools.

The winner was Neville Groves with 52-10-0 of small carp and silvers which fell to pellet on Spring pool peg 10. Des Ravenhall finished in second place with 47-3-0 and venue star Lee Richards was third, weighing 36-7-0.

With the river season closing on Wednesday, this weekend would normally be the last chance for anglers to exercise their running water skills but, with all local waters in flood, opportunities will be limited.

However, should the Severn return within it's banks, anglers should be encouraged by the news that local matchman Dean Price landed 14 barbel in a single day from Diglis when the river was around three foot from the top of the bank.

For the less adventurous, stillwaters are producing good carp weights to corn and pellet, while, on the canal, roach are feeding with good nets coming to breadpunch or caster.
