RAINBOW provided the biggest upset of the season so far in Division One of the Worcester Table Tennis League with a 7-3 home win over Wyre.

Joe Higgs was in fine form for Rainbow, winning all three of his singles matches.

Higgs chalked up the more side's first win with a four-set triumph over Doug Payne, but Wyre hit back when Nick Mytton beat Pete Griffiths.

The away side then took the lead as Matt Hartwell saw off Trevor Simmons, but Griffiths levelled the match at 2-2 with a win over Payne. Higgs then beat Hartwell, but the lead was cancelled out again by Mytton winning against Simmons. Rainbow's doubles pair of Higgs and Simmons then got the better of Mytton and Hartwell in three sets.

Griffiths followed on with a five-set tussle over Hartwell with Simmons finally taking the match beyond Wyre's control with another five-setter, this time over Payne. Higgs then completed his hat-trick with a three-set win over Mytton.

Cripplegate Roamers have now closed the gap on Wyre to two points after taking maximum points from their last two matches, although Wyre have a game in hand.

Week 17: St George's 7, Pavilion Players 3; Cripplegate Roamers 10, Broadheath Barflies 0; Rainbow 7, Wyre 3.

In Division Three, top team St George's Dragons were hard-pressed to beat visiting YMCA Elizabethans 6-4.

The match was decided in the final game between the Dragons' Steve Mills and OE's David Bradley, with Mills winning in three close sets.

For the Dragons, Samuel Mills won two singles and youngster Gabriel Dent did well to beat Lisa Lang over five sets.

The Dragons also landed a 7-3 win at YMCA Wildcats. Steve and Samuel Mills were both unbeaten, while Piotr and Kamil Chmurzynski each won a singles game for the Wildcats and combined to also take the doubles.

Home side Nemesis triumphed 6-4 over WGCC in another tight match.

At one stage, the home side opened up a 4-1 lead, but Graham Meredith stood firm for the golf club, winning his three singles matches as well as his doubles game with Paddy Mullen.

The win achieved by Nemesis was due to a superb team effort by Richard Collis, Don James and Ray Davies who each won two singles games.
