MALVERN made Stafford suffer at a bright and breezy Spring Lane as they stormed to a 69-0 win in Midlands Two West.

The bottom club were unable to match Malvern's power in any department. George Roberts made a couple of early threatening runs and he was sent on his way by Chris Hooper in the third minute, which drew the defence and put Tukia Muli in for the opening score.

Malvern's pack totally dominated proceedings throughout and the back row ball-carriers made inroads to set up the backs.

Hooper joined the line to put Muli in for his second score with Watkins converting in the 12th minute.

Richard Fleming decided to run straight through the middle of the Stafford defence to put Hooper in, with Watkins collecting the extra brace.

The full-back nearly added another but his kick ahead was just a little too strong and the ball went dead. From the drop-out, Ben Lamb went on a mazy run to score and set up the Watkins conversion.

Malvern finished off the first-half with a controlled 20-metre driving maul, sucking in the Stafford def-ence and allowing scrum-half Julian Lambert to score.

The second-half produced more of the same with Fleming scoring after a tap-and-go penalty move and following up with another score soon after.

Watkins was again on the mark for the extras. Jamie Anderson was finding his best form, charging through the defence and flattening would-be tacklers.

One such move set young hooker Liam Maloney off down the middle for a well-deserved score. Hooper again joined in with a swerving run downfield with Roberts collecting the scoring pass.

As the game entered it's last 10 minutes, Malvern still hadn't finished scoring.

Roberts fielded a clearance and used his strength to shake off tackle after tackle to score and set up Watkins for another two points.

As the clock ran down, Watkins put a penalty into the corner for a catch-and-drive line-out, the almost inevitable result being the emergence of Shaun Lancett with the ball to claim the leading try scorer's position in the league.

Director of rugby Dave Robins was delighted with the display of running rugby by the back division but was quick to point out the possession they had was due to the efforts up front.

He said: "Tribute must be paid to the hard work put in at the line-out by the locks and tremendous work in the loose.

"Jamie Anderson and Matt Richardson proved their fitness at just the right time as we go into a fairly busy end of season run-in.

"We have our local derby league match against Bromsgrove at home this week followed by Camp Hill and Burton away."
