WORCESTERSHIRE'S Sean Young failed to make the National Finals of the Golden Gloves Schoolboy Boxing Championships when he was outpointed by Michael Watson (South Durham) in the semi-finals at Spennymoor.

Young, from Fernhill Heath who boxes for the Droitwich club and attends Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Worcester, put up a spirited performance against a well-schooled opponent.

He frequently had Watson backed up on the ropes as he put everything into his at-tempt to make the final, but Watson was sharp with his counter-punching, landing the better shots to take the verdict.

"Sean was disappointed with his performance - he felt he could have done better - but he has nothing to reproach himself with," said Droitwich coach, Chris Andrews.

"He gave his all, and no-one can ask more than that. On the day Watson was that little bit too sharp, catching Sean with good crisp punches at critical periods, and that proved the difference between them."
