GIRLS' rugby is booming at Worcester's Nunnery Wood High School.

The under 15s team from the Spetchley Road school won the West Midlands tournament for the second year running, remaining undefeated.

They qualified for the national finals for the second consecutive season and finished 12th overall in the country.

Not wanting to be left behind, the under 13s team were joint second in the West Midlands tournament and then won the Golden Fern Cup for year eight pupils in Cheltenham.

Nunnery Wood's Brooke Clarke and Sarah Kilmister have qualified to play for England under 18s and under 15s respectively through the RFU national talent development programme.

Several students are playing district rugby with Alicia Watkins and Cara Clarke at under 15s level.

In the regional tournament, the successful under 15s beat Staffordshire's John Taylor School 40-5, Walsall Academy 20-5 and Church Stretton 25-0.

They defeated Church Stretton 35-5 in the quarter-finals, Thomas Alleyne's High, Uttoxeter, 35-0 in the semis and Wodensborough Ormiston Academy, Wednesbury, 40-0 in the final.

In the national finals at Staines, Nunnery Wood had a player taken to hospital early on and could not play their last game after further injuries.

But the girls recorded one win, three draws and two defeats to be ranked 12th in the country.

Top scorers this season were Cara Clarke and Kiara Hopkins with Watkins and Kilmister providing the most assists.

The under 13s team beat Bredon Hill Sharks 20-0 and Wodensborough 40-0 at their West Midlands tournament but lost to Oldfield 20-5.

Finishing second in their pool gave them a chance of playing for the national finals at Twickenham but they narrowly missed out after finishing joint second with Bredon Hill 'A'.

Nunnery Wood beat John Taylor School 30-10, drew with Bredon Hill 'A' 25-25 after Grace Moseley had a late try disallowed and lost to Oldfield 20-10.

Top scorers this season were Deanne Clarke, Moseley and Katie Harris.

They won all eight games at the Golden Fern Cup, seeing off Ribston High, Churchdown High, St Peters High and their own third-placed 'B' team twice.

Sian Richardson claimed the Empress Award for player of the tournament.
