WORCESTERSHIRE Rapids are still seeking their first win in the Royal London One-Day Cup after a 36-run defeat against Surrey at the Kia Oval tonight.

In reply to Surrey’s imposing 328-7, Rapids skipper Daryl Mitchell, who suffered a hamstring injury, Tom Fell and Joe Clarke all made half-centuries.

Rapids supporters were given hope when Ross Whiteley (35) and wicketkeeper Ben Cox (21) combined for an explosive sixth-wicket stand of 55 in 29 deliveries.

But when Whiteley’s 24-ball knock, which contained six fours and a six, ended after he lofted a full toss from James Burke to Kumar Sangakkara in the deep, Rapids were 258-6 in the 43rd over.

They were eventually bowled out for 292 in the 47th over.

Worcestershire have lost four successive matches in the competition and are back in Group ‘A’ action tomorrow against Gloucestershire at New Road (10.30am).

A second-wicket stand of 144 in 25 overs between opener Jason Roy (99) and Sangakkara (76) laid the foundations of Surrey’s total. Jack Shantry accounted for Steve Davies (13) before Roy and Sangakkara put Surrey in control.

It took a stunning one-handed catch by Mitchell off Shantry to dismiss Sangakkara.

A one-handed catch by Cox dismissed Roy one short of his century from a Joe Leach delivery. Cox’s sharp stumping removed Rory Burns (61) from the last delivery of Saeed Ajmal’s spell.

Zafar Ansari (18), Burke (3) and Gary Wilson (34) were all run out as Surrey closed on 328-7.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore (18) put on 43 for the first Rapids wicket with Mitchell before he was caught off a leading edge from a Sam Curran delivery.

Mitchell pulled up after taking a single off Jade Dernbach and needed treatment. He was only able to continue with Kohler-Cadmore employed as a runner.

Mitchell went to his 50 off 57 balls with seven fours out of 77-1 in the 16th over.

Mitchell pulled two more deliveries from Burke for four but on 59 was undone by a ball from spinner Gareth Batty which turned and bounced.

Fell brought up his 50 with a six off Batty and it came from 58 balls and also contained three fours.

He moved on to 63 before he was caught behind after adding 98 in 17 overs with Clarke. Brett D’Oliveira (3) was bowled via a bottom edge.

Clarke went to his half-century from 57 balls before he was caught for 54.

Whiteley holed out to long on and then Leach was bowled for four. Cox’s breezy 21 was ended by Burke’s yorker and then Dernbach wrapped up the match by bowling Ed Barnard (16) and having Ajmal (0) caught behind.
