THE sport of walking football will be starting at a new venue in Worcester next week for men and women over the age of 50 years.

Keen sportsman Barry Potter is excited about the weekly sessions which will get under way on an outdoor pitch at the University of Worcester on Monday from 2.30pm to 3.45pm.

Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire are working in partnership with the University of Worcester for the project at the St John’s Campus.

The university are planning to provide two coaches for each session, which will include a warm up, drills, a game and a cool down element.

Walking football is a slow-paced version of soccer and is designed for people over the age of 50.

Potter, who has pushed the scheme forward, says walking football gives older people a chance to remain fit and active and make new friendships.

Potter said: “I was involved in the formation of the Worcester and District Sunday League in Worcester 50 years ago and I think walking football is great fun. It provides people with an opportunity to make friends and improve their health.

“Walking football is a game which we can played by men and women of all ages. We would like people from the age of 50 to 90 to come along.

“It’s the same as a normal game of football, but with a small difference — there is no running and no jogging.”

Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire spokesman Liz Corrigan said a walking football taster session in Worcester earlier this year had been a huge success.

“We did a walking football session at the St John’s Campus in May and it was very well supported,” said Corrigan.

“Barry Potter, with his tremendous enthusiasm, has pushed this project forward and it’s a fantastic opportunity for people in Worcester to get re-engaged with a gentle sporting activity.

“All people need is to wear some comfortable clothing, sensible footwear which offers good ankle support and bring a bottle of water.”
