GOALKEEPER James Gerrish was in excellent form as Worcester recorded a 4-2 win at Hampton-in-Arden in their opening match in Warwick Printing Midlands League Division One.

Worcester’s success was built on Gerrish’s fine showing as he showed dogged determination to deny Hampton from their first penalty corner and then made four saves in quick succession.

Gerrish’s stops ignited Worcester and when Dave Westhead weaved past two defenders, he set up Richard Stocks on the back post for an easy tap-in.

However, the elation was short-lived and Hampton hit back within a minute, Gerrish unable to stop a powerful strike into the corner.

Tom Schubert regained the advantage for Worcester when a Hampton error provided a one-on-one opportunity, which he took with ease.

In the final minute of the first-half, Hampton missed an open goal opportunity and were unfortunate to be behind at the break.

Worcester dominated the midfield at the start of the second-half, with Joe Schubert tormenting the Hampton defenders.

When he created a penalty corner, brother Tom stepped up to increase the lead with a superb drag-flick.

Gerrish continued to deny Hampton any chance of reducing the deficit, with another double save from open play.

When Joe Schubert set up Chris Perry for a back post tap-in with 10 minutes left to play, Worcester’s victory was sealed.

Hampton snapped up a second consolation goal in the dying moments, but it was too little too late to save the hosts.

n Worcester fifths fought back from a 2-0 interval deficit to pick up a point from a 2-2 draw at Warwick fourths in their opening match in the Central Division of the West Midlands Premier.

Although Worcester controlled large parts of the game, they conceded two first-half goals on the break from sloppy defending.

Worcester showed plenty of promise but they were unable to convert any chances at the other end.

Worcester came out for the second-half, however, much more determined and their pressure was rewarded midway through the period when Kev Oliver fired home after a fine passing move which travelled the length of the pitch.

Worcester pushed forward and soon found an equaliser when Paul Simons scored from a short corner.

Both sides pushed forward in search a winner but it didn’t arrive and the game ended in a draw.
