WORCESTER City fans have blamed a minority of supporters for “moronic” and “thuggish” behaviour at their big FA Cup clash at Sheffield United.

City’s performance on the pitch drew admirers but “disturbances” inside the stadium prompted United to shut the food and drink kiosks catering for away fans for “safety reasons”.

Two men have since been charged for drunk and disorderly behaviour and will face magistrates court.

Worcester’s fans could purchase food and drink, including alcohol, from them before kick-off but they were not reopened at the half-time interval.

Around 2,000 City fans flocked to Bramall Lane for the first-round tie, which the Blue and Whites lost 3-0.

Chris Plant, who travelled to the tie on an official supporters’ coach, said he saw fans causing problems inside the stadium before kick-off.

He claimed: “I saw a few guys ordering beer from behind the bar, buying six or seven at a time and only paying a few pounds for them and being aggressive towards the staff.

“I hadn’t eaten all day so at half- time I went down to get food but on the way heard an announcement saying the booths were closed for away fans.

“It was annoying I couldn’t eat because of rowdy morons who were there for trouble rather than to watch the game.

"We enjoyed the atmosphere and the game but the day as a whole was ruined by thugs like that who aren’t football fans at all.

“They’re more interested in causing trouble.”

City club secretary John Jordan was aware the kiosks had closed after hearing an announcement over the public address system.

Sheffield United’s senior communications officer Kevin Cookson said: “There were disturbances in the away section at Saturday’s game and, upon advice from security services and the police, for safety reasons we took the decision to close the refreshment kiosks.”

City fans have vented their anger on internet message boards towards Worcester’s “once-a-year” supporters for putting the club in a bad light.

Worcester1066 said online: “Makes you proud that our superb fans managed to get the concessions stall(s) shut at half-time, not even Millwall managed that.”

Thesecondjack said: “Their refreshment stalls were closed at half-time (due to our fans being drunk/disorderly?) which put us in the annoying situation of some being hungry on the way home, whilst most wanted to get home asap.”

Alwaysnextyear backed United’s decision to close the bars and refreshments kiosks.

They said online: “Why should SUFC staff feel intimidated and threatened by aggressive, drunken and moronic once-a-year supporters, whose lack of intelligence confuses supporting your side with chants to goad the opposition fans.

“It was bad enough for me, as a City fan, to have to suffer these cretins, so why should their staff have to pick out who to serve and who not?

“I thought SUFC handled the situation perfectly as what else could they do?

“A youngster going without food and drink for an hour is hardly a hardship and I’m sure that any medical need would have been addressed.”

The Verner said: “The idiots all gathered in one area of the stand, none of them were in their correct seats.

“Also many people with kids moved to the front near me to get away from the language and chanting.”

City director Mike Davis wasn’t at the match — he was at a wedding — but said there had been no reports of any trouble on the 10 supporters’ coaches.

South Yorkshire Police had not provided a comment at the time of going to press.
