EXPERIENCED striker Deon Burton has revealed the FA Trophy has presented him with a great opportunity to fulfil his boyhood dream of playing at Wembley.

Worcester City defeated Brackley Town 2-0 on Saturday to set up a first round tie away to Vanarama National League outfit Southport on Saturday, December 12, and Burton believes a run to the final is achievable.

In a career spanning 21 years, Burton has represented Jamaica in the 1998 World Cup, played in the Premier League with Derby County and Portsmouth and scored at the Millennium Stadium as Stoke City secured promotion to Division One in 2002.

However, the 39-year-old, who has won more than 50 caps for his country, has yet to appear at England’s national stadium and spoke of his determination to achieve that feat with Worcester.

“The FA Trophy offers us a very good opportunity to get to Wembley so why not try our best in the competition to try to achieve that?” he said.

“It is one thing on my bucket list that I have never done, so I would love to play at Wembley before I retire. I think every player wants to play there but it hasn’t happened yet.

“I missed the opportunity (in 2002) as Wembley was getting re-developed so we played at the Millennium Stadium instead.

“I have not been to the new Wembley but I have been to the old one and always envisaged one day hopefully being able to play there and this cup competition has given me that opportunity to maybe achieve that.”

Southport, who currently find themselves in the bottom four, will be favourites to beat Worcester at Haig Avenue.

However, having knocked Gateshead out of the FA Cup, Burton, who joined the Blue and Whites as a player-coach in the summer, said the players will be confident of causing an upset.

“Obviously, we have played against a side in that league already in Gateshead and done very well, so I don’t see any reason why we can’t go away from home and hopefully do the same again,” Burton said.

“We are playing well at the moment having won three on the bounce.

“Everything is looking quite rosy and most of the players are fit, so we are not afraid of anyone at the moment in our league or the league above.”

City play at Tamworth in National League North on Saturday.
