WORCESTER powered to an entertaining 29-10 home win over Wasps in the Women’s Premiership despite atrocious playing conditions.

The teams provided an entertaining contest in gusting winds and torrential rain with few handling errors as both played sensibly.

Fifth-placed Worcester started brightly with the forwards providing a platform for the backs and Rochelle Clark crossed the line following a rolling maul after just four minutes.

Nine minutes later, a sparkling passage of play saw Rachel Lund released to score under the posts although the conversion was missed.

Five minutes later, the impressive Kelly Smith worked her way into space and outpaced three defenders to add to the lead with Bianca Blackburn landing a superb conversion.

More powerful play from the forwards saw Ammie Lensson increase the lead with Blackburn again taking the extras to establish a 22-0 half-time lead.

Lund scored her second try with powerful evasive running in four minutes of the second period to secure the bonus point.

However, sixth-placed Wasps came fighting back and enjoyed a purple patch of 20 minutes when Clare Purdy and Hannah West reduced the deficit to give them hope of a turnaround.

The hosts recognised they had become complacent and pressed Wasps for the final 10 minutes, but their defence held out.

The first XV have no game on Sunday but the seconds entertain high-flying Lichfield at Weston’s Fields (2pm).
