WORCESTERSHIRE'S Pineau De Re, the 2014 Grand National winner, has been retired.

The 13-year-old was pulled up at Uttoxeter yesterday and Claines trainer Dr Richard Newland feels now is the right time to call it a day.

"He was disappointing on Saturday but only recently he'd run a cracker in the Scottish National," he said.

"It's time to draw stumps, now is the right time. He ran on Saturday as Uttoxeter is his owner John Provan's local track.

"He's still in great shape and we'll look to retrain him. My wife and daughters have plenty of experience of doing that sort of thing and I'm sure they'll do a good job.

"Aintree was a great day, one we'll never forget. The main race you want to win when you are involved in racing is the Grand National.

"He was bought specifically for the race, so to go and win it was very special indeed.

"He's had a good season, he was the first National winner for ages to win another race when he won up at Carlisle.

"He's been a wonderful servant and means a lot to me."
