WORCESTER Swimming Club star Rebecca Redfern claimed silver in the 100m breaststroke at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Portugal.

The 16-year-old from Droitwich Spa set a world record at last week’s Great British Para Meet in Glasgow and she continued her impressive form in Madeira.

After a strong heat on Tuesday morning, Redfern, who is visually impaired, went through to the final with the quickest time of 1:17.52 in the SB13 classification.

But it was Elena Krawzow, of Germany, who came out on top in the end as she secured gold with a time of 1.17.44.

Redfern (1.17.46) had to settle for second while Karolina Pelendritou (1:18.60), of Cyprus, took the final podium spot.

This was Redfern’s international debut for Great Britain at the European competition and she will now wait until May 16 for confirmation of her place at the Rio Paralympic Games.

Meanwhile, Kidderminster's Claire Cashmore set a personal best in Portugal as she won bronze in the S9 100m butterfly.
