DROITWICH Rugby Club's under 17s have enjoyed a record-breaking seven-year run as North Midlands Cup champions.

The winning sequence started at under 10s level and the boys defended their title against Lichfield at Old Halesonians' Wassell Grove ground with a 55-5 success.

Spa advanced with a hard-fought 8-7 semi-final home win over Moseley, while Lichfield enjoyed a 20-10 victory at Worcester.

On a sunny day, the final was held on the first XV pitch in front of a packed main stand.

Despite Spa trailing 5-3 midway through the first half, they produced a stunning four-try salvo to lead 29-5 by the break.

Droitwich produced fine running rugby in the second period and led 55-5 when the final whistle was blown 10 minutes from time after they reached the maximum points tally allowed under cup rules.

Coach Adam Drew said: “Lichfield battled hard throughout and we were forced to work extremely hard to score our eight tries.

“Our record remains intact and that gives me an immense sense of pride for the boys and Droitwich.

"We will now regroup ahead of touch and sevens tournaments, which will lead neatly into our summer conditioning and fitness programme.

“Our plans for next season as colts are well advanced and we would welcome any boys interested in joining us, regardless of their experience."
