GREAT Witley cyclist Janet Birkmyre opened her women’s National Omnium series with an impressive victory in the first round at Herne Hill in London.

Birkmyre, who rides for TORQ Fitness, is the defending series champion and took top spot after consistently strong performances across all of the five disciplines that make up the omnium.

The event started with a 500m time trial, followed by a scratch race, match sprinting, a pursuit and finally a points race at the historic Herne Hill velodrome.

She won the pursuit and was second in the time trial and scratch.

A fourth place in the sprint meant Birkmyre went into the final event with a four-point lead over her closest rival. By the end of the points race, Birkmyre managed to extend the lead to win by six points.

Birkmyre said: “It was a great day of racing with some exciting and aggressive racing. It feels incredible to win and I am very grateful to my husband for all he does behind the scenes.”
