DROITWICH Tennis Club men’s B team suffered an agonising losing draw at Hallow B in Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer Doubles League Division Five.

Eric Cartelet and Nick King, Oliver Shear and Mark Pearsall and Robin Jones and Joe Maidment all won one match and lost one.

But the extra set claimed by Hallow consigned Droitwich to a second defeat of the season.

The D team lost 5-1 at David Lloyd Worcester C in drizzly weather in Division Eight.

Ian Ross and John Jenkins lost both matches as did Mark Walker and Chris Day.

Ricky Hollander and Chris Passey claimed a consolation win.

The D team previously beat Hallow C 5-1. Ross and Josh McEvilly lost in straight sets but reacted well to triumph 6-2, 6-1.

Hollander and Passey won 6-3, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-0, while young Tom Trow and Evan Goss triumphed 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2.

The men’s Aegon B team narrowly lost 4-2 to Worcester B in boiling weather.

Ben Steel and Neil Bates lost in straight sets, while Cartelet and Nick King fell in three.

Cartelet and Steel lost in the singles but Bates and King won.

Droitwich’s mixed B team beat Evesham 3-1 to keep up their 100 per cent start to the season in Division Three.

Steel and Caroline Brookes lost 6-4, 6-3 before winning 7-6, 6-0.

Bates and Kate Hughes won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-1.

The C team lost 3-1 to Moreton-in-Marsh B in Division Four.

Jackie Passey and John Moran lost in straight sets before winning 6-4, 6-3. Nigel Hughes and Sue Webber lost twice in straight sets.

Droitwich nine-year-old James Stanford represented Herefordshire and Worcestershire under 10 boys in Sunderland as their number one seed.

He won one and lost two but helped the counties to eighth in their first appearance at the national finals.
