FINE weather prevailed as a record number of Worcester Golf and Country Club members competed in the 36-hole club championships.

Competition was keen but the winner was relatively new member Ben Woodward.

The three-handicapper, who only joined Boughton Park in April, shot gross rounds of 69 and 74 to finish three ahead of Jack Humphreys (4 handicap) to lift the coveted trophy.

David Hunt (5) was third with rounds of 73 and 74.

Fourteen-year-old James Lloyd (7) took the D’Arcy Hughes Trophy for the best nett score of 137.

Lloyd, who 18 months ago played off 15, shot 66 and 71 to beat Hunt and Woodward on count-back.

The club’s Centenary Invitation Cup was won by home member Wayne Sheridan and his guest David Sunston, of Bath, with a better-ball score of nett 61.

Runners-up were Duncan Macpherson and Alan Watts, of The Worcestershire, on 63.

Third on count-back was Mark Dancox and Jem Clarke, of Droitwich, on 64. Brian Gardner, on count-back, won the George Lodge Trophy with 40 points.

Shaun Roberts was runner-up and Rob Powell finished third, one point behind.

Richard Jones topped Division One in the June Thursday medal with 77 gross 10 handicap 67 nett.

Rick Maskell (73-6-67) was second and junior member Edward Pickering (74-7-67) third.

Grahame Taylor (89-17-72) won Division Two with veteran Mike George (93-18-75) runner-up and Chris Devney (89-14-75) third.

Harriet Matthews (5) won the ladies’ club championship with rounds of 85+77=162. Matthews finished ahead of Jane Nicklin (14), who recorded 96+90=186.

Maggie Thompson (71+65=136) won the Burrows Cup with Angela Pearce runner-up on 73+77=155.

Thirty-nine points was enough for Chris Scott to lift the Stableford and Veterans Cup with Kay Byrne runner-up on 37.

Scott and Nicklin took the honours in the Ping 4BBB on 39 points with Mel Walker and Carys Lewis finishing second on 37.
