PERDISWELL Park’s most prestigious competition in their golfing calendar, the club championship, was contested by 22 players off scratch.

Split into two rounds, the leading 50 per cent of the field after round one made the cut.

Tommy Hayes was crowned the winner with 70 and 73 for a total of 143.

Barrie Hope finished second with 74+75=149 and Steve Williams third on 72+78=150.

Hayes, Williams, Hope, Steve Baylis (75), Adrian Day (77), John Griffiths (78), Billy Lane (79), Tom Jenkins (79), Steve Kupfer (80), Roy Coombes (81), Steve Griffiths (83) and Adrian Tinker (84) qualified for the second round Hayes again set the pace with 13 pars and two birdies in round one followed by 11 pars and another two birdies.

Although playing with consistency throughout both rounds, Hope just let too many shots get away from him.

Day took third place in the round with 75 and Williams had 78 but his final score was good enough for third overall.

The Turner Shield for higher handicap players went to Bill Kelly (22 handicap) with 63 nett from Jan Schutte (20) on 66, John Hine (21) on 68 and George Postans (19) with 69 on countback from David Bradley, Chris Williams and Steve Wiggin.

Although only bagging six pars, Kelly played consistently throughout the rest of his round to lead a 33-strong field.

Meanwhile, Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park 15-year-old Leighton Hine aced the par-three, 14th hole during round four of the summer league.

Hine (15) bagged his first hole-in-one with an eight iron in a blustery wind and has only played golf for 12 months.

But the league round was won by Wiggin (18) with 63 nett ahead of Mike Williams (20) on 66, Hope (8) on 67 and Ian Threadgold (24) with 68 on countback over Day and Dave Phillips. Wiggin dropped in a tidy five pars and two birdies on the ninth and 15th.

A handicap reduction down to 17 followed his winning round.

Just six of the 23 starters came in with nett par or better for the course.

The President’s Cup fourth round went to Mark Keeling (16) with 63 nett followed by Geoff Edge (25) on 64, Postans on 65 and Hope with 66 on count-back from Fred Hackett and Dave Hancocks.

Eight pars set Keeling up well but a superb eagle two on the second hole was the deciding factor.

A midweek Stableford was won by Martin Hucker (15) with 39 points in front of Steve Griffiths (16) on 37, Roger Savage (14) on 37 and Malcolm Stanley (22) on 35. Opening and closing his round with three consecutive pars, carding nine overall and a birdie on the 11th, Hucker held on despite also returning three double bogies or worse.

Perdiswell Park seniors lost 5½-1½ at Sherdons in Tewkesbury in the annual friendly.

Ed Nicklin and Postans won 3&2, while Roger Jones and Brian Hodgetts halved, But Phil Lane and John Hine lost 4&3, Steve Griffiths and Steve Duggan 3&2, Norman Vernalls and Malcolm Stanley 4&2, Mick Huggins and Kelly 2&1 and Collis Fisher and Brian Cash 2 &1.

The ladies’ 30+ medal went to Jan Richardson (35) with 83 nett.
