VETERAN team Fossils enjoyed an unbeaten second tour to Somerset with two wins.

The first game at Nailsea was close with Martin Woodward (18 not out) doing his bit at the end.

But John Riley was run out going for the winning run from the last ball to record a tie with both teams finishing on 158 from their 35 overs.

Glyn Thomas (1-7 from five overs) and Woodward (3-14) were the pick of the Fossils bowlers.

A fine stand of 90 in 15 overs between Roy Cooper (41) and Paul Fairman (40) gave Nailsea the upper hand against the change bowlers.

Colin Hobbs (40) and Peter Gurr (42) put Fossils on the right path.

Thomas (17), Derek Ebbage (14) and Woodward kept the score going but a final over by Ron Billows only gave away three runs.

An excellent win at Claverham by seven wickets was down to good bowling by Martin Mudway (1-13 from 6 overs) and Hobbs (51) and Gurr (51) putting on 151 before they were parted.

Claverham’s Steve Moss (49) and Stan Cuttler (24) had 69 on the board in 28 overs.

Steve Mann hit a quick 29 as he and Paul Thorpe (27) launched into the bowlers and their team finished on 167.

Fossils’ Hobbs and Gurr, helped by a fine 40 from Kevin Gilbert, were always in front of the clock.

Riley and Nigel Price went for ducks but Liz Dean and Patrick Carroll took their team past the winning post on 169-5.

Carroll had a 69th birthday to remember as he took 1-16 and held on to two good catches to help Fossils to win number two.

Congresbury only had 86 on the board from the first 20 overs thanks to good bowling from Dean (1-19) and Paul Thompson (1-16), backed up by Thomas’ 2-13 from seven overs.

Dave March (50) was the only home batsman to get after the bowling as Congresbury finished on 157 from 40 overs.

Simon Hudson (37) and Wilf Pinfold (33) had a good stand after Fred Lloyd (12) and Carroll departed.

Don Bates (17) and Gilbert (17) got things back on track before Ebbage hit a quick 14 to take Fossils home by five wickets on 160-5.

In a high-scoring final game, Fossils played Yatton Oldstars.

Yatton made 217 from 35 overs and Fossils replied with 203-7.

Five Yatton batsmen scored over 30 as they put the bowlers to the sword.

Gurr bowled well without any luck.

Fossils were behind the rate for a long time but Gurr and John Cuttler both made 33 to get them back on track.

Hudson (24) and Price (17) kept things going but wickets fell and they ended just 14 runs adrift for the draw.
