TEENAGE all-rounder Georgia Hennessy will be lining up with — and against — some of the biggest names in women’s cricket over the next month.

The 19-year-old from Malvern has signed for star-studded Western Storm for the ground-breaking Women’s Kia Super Cricket League which gets under way this weekend.

Hennessy is in the same side as England captain Heather Knight and vice-skipper Anya Shrubsole for the six-team Twenty20 competition.

South African Lizelle Lee, New Zealander Rachel Priest and West Indian Stafanie Taylor are also in the squad.

“The competition is incredible,” said Hennessy, who plays for Malvern side Barnards Green when she’s able to.

“To know we have the West Indies T20 World Cup-winning captain, New Zealand wicketkeeper and England captain in the squad is amazing.

“We started training as a squad at the beginning of July and have been working hard together in the excellent facilities at Exeter University.”

It is the inaugural season of the England and Wales Cricket Board competition and Storm open their maiden campaign against Lancashire Thunder at Taunton on Sunday (2.30pm).

Hennessy’s father John said: “The league consists of the best women’s cricketers in the world with each team having three top overseas players.

“With current England players involved and brand new teams, it promises to be a feast of T20 cricket games at some of the most prestigious grounds around the country.”

Hennessy, a former Worcestershire women’s all-rounder and The Chase School pupil, started playing cricket at the age of nine.

She has represented England at under 19s level and now is attached to Warwickshire having moved to the Birmingham club three years ago.

Storm warmed up for Sunday’s opener with a midweek warm-up defeat against Southern Vipers.

However, Hennessy picked up three wickets, including former England captain Charlotte Edwards and Lydia Greenway.

She said: “I love T20 cricket, it’s my favourite format and I am doing quite well this season.

“Potentially, I could be bowling in the closing overs or during the powerplays.

“I batted at five in the warm-up match but we were missing a few players so, realistically, I hope to be in the top seven.”

Storm will play their home matches at Taunton or Bristol and the T20 competition also includes Surrey Stars, Loughborough Lightning, who include Worcestershire all-rounder and Pershore player Thea Brookes, and Yorkshire Diamonds.

Teams will contest 15 group matches and aim to qualify for finals day at Essex’s Chelmsford ground on August 21.

A 50-over component is likely to be added to the competition next summer ahead of the Women’s World Cup in England and Wales.

After the tournament, Hennessy says she will head off to Australia to play cricket during the winter.
