BARBOURNE AC star Lee Griffiths comfortably won his first contest of the new season at Woodland View’s Arles pool.

With all the leading contenders drawn on the same side, Griffiths took the top pay-out.

Offering corn and pellet at five metres on peg four saw him feed carp to 5lb into his net which, along with skimmers and F1s, secured a winning 74lb 10oz 0dr total.

Runner-up Terry Box, on the adjacent peg five, used a similar approach and recorded an all-carp 66-4.

Third was regular winner Bob Griffiths with a peg six 49-10 carp net taken on pellet waggler, which narrowly beat Ashley Bosworth’s peg seven catch of 47-2.

Tomorrow, the Barbourne club are on their own pool at Cotheridge.

In-form Mal Galliers won the Droitwich Spa open contest on the canal at Porters Mill with a peg 16 skimmer bream and perch weight of 14-1 on pole-fished red maggot.

Second from peg one came Paul Wilson (Swan AC) with a mixed bag caught on pinkie going 13-1-13.

Organising club member Ken Legge took third with 11-10 from peg nine, while fourth came Droitwich ace Lloyd Davis weighing 7-13-8 from the bottom pound peg 33.

Section winners were Tony Hamilton, Mick Watson, Reg Barnstable and Mick Samson.

The Whitehall club contest on Laugherne Island pool at Cobb House produced a rare tie for first place with Mick Spragg and Richard Oliver both recording all-carp weights of 74-0.

Spragg used maggot and pellet in the margins of peg 29, while Oliver used the same bait at seven metres on peg 39.

Some way behind on peg 33 came Glenn Butt with a maggot-taken 41-6.

Section prizes went to Len Merrill, Carl Graham, Dan Sydall and Mike Hope.

An impromptu meet on the River Severn at Upton produced four weights over 20lb with winning Worcester ace Alan Baldwin catching six feeder-caught bream from peg 36 on the ham going 28-10.

Following were Rich Brewer with 25-10 of bream from peg 30, John Snelson with a peg 34 catch of 24-2 and Richard Blight with 22-7.

Malvern Anglers’ Saturday afternoon scramble match on the River Avon at Cropthorne was won by veteran Bill Hartland.

He used float tactics with hemp and tare baits to catch more than 70 roach, chub and skimmers to weigh in 8-8.

Paul Lane used float-fished maggot to land a number of chub and perch to finish second with 8-2.

John Shaw was third with 5-12 followed by John Taylor with 4-14 and Chris Loveridge with 2-8.
