WHITEHALL members enjoyed excellent carp catches at Broadheath Fisheries’ Ash pool for the club annual match.

Dan Sydall stole the show by taking the only ton-up catch.

Drawn towards the end of the pool on peg 25, Sydall used a method feeder with meat hookbait cast into the margins and caught fish to 15lb in his 109lb 4oz 0dr net.

Runner-up Richard Blight had to wait until the final two hours when, acting on expert advice, he changed his approach to offer luncheon meat close into the bank on peg 19. Despite losing big fish, he took 66-2 in quick time.

Third was club star Dave Warren, whose peg 15 corn-fed catch of 62-2 narrowly beat in-form John Shelton with 62-0.

Colin Davis won the Droitwich Spa club contest on Hallow pools with an all-carp, meat-caught weight of 19-2.

Runner-up Steve Robson weighed 18-3 taken on the pellet and third came veteran Dennis Evans with 14-0. Section winners were Ken Smith and Ken Legge.

The club hold the Ted Gibbs memorial contest to honour the former Severn champion on the Droitwich canal on Sunday, September 11, with details and tickets from Dave Hall on 07970 023894.

The Bill Burton memorial contest was on Leigh Sinton’s Kingfisher pool where Mark Nind (Midland Red) won with three carp on the meat going 26-4.

Second was Mark Smith with a mixed 9-12, while Mike Hope, winner of the contest for the last three years, had to settle for third with just 3-9 of tiny perch.

The match raised more than £150 for charity.

The Halfway House AC pairs match on Church Farm pool produced a tight result with overall winner Pete Jones recording 24-12 from peg 17.

Along with Colin Bradley’s 7-10, it saw them declared winners with a total of 32-6.

Runners-up were Graham Goodyear with a silverfish catch of 24-6 along with Ron Pitt weighing 5-12 for 30-2.

Top individuals were Jones, Goodyear, Steve Williams and Steve Pitt. The next club match is on Sunday, September 4.

Worcester stalwart Bill Biddle won an open on the Bewdley AS section of the Droitwich canal.

He landed three skimmers along with a few roach and a big perch on pinkie bait weighing 4-1-8.

Second was Harry Harrison (Tewkesbury Gyms) with 3-15-5 of crucian carp and perch to beat Doug Gosling’s third-placed 3-0, while fourth went to Sue Jaques with 2-12.

Nigel Field won a WDUAA open with three bream and a few small fish on groundbait and pinkie from the end peg 11 at Blackpole weighing 5-13-4.

Second came Martin Hunt’s peg four bream and bleak catch of 4-11-12, while third saw Tim Biddle weigh 3-14-3 from peg 10.

WDUAA hold the Nigel Harvey memorial contest as a tribute to the popular Worcester national angler on Sunday, September 4.

Malvern Anglers’ members gathered at the Grebe Pool at Holt Heath’s Top Barn Fishery to take part in their Newtown Shield match.

In a sheltered place from the wind, Sean Taylor had about 15 carp up to 6lb on a variety of methods and baits for 60-5.

From another sheltered peg, Frank Edwards also had carp and bream on legered sweetcorn to finish second with 47-12.

On the next peg, Ian Goddard finished third with 33-12.

Graham Rees did well until he fell in trying to land a big carp but nevertheless finished fourth with 25-0.

John Shaw caught 11-7, Dick Oakley 10-6, Lee Harman 9-9, Chris Loveridge 4-12, Richard Webster 3-0 and John Wagstaff 2-8.

Thousands of fishing enthusiasts will again be flocking to the Vale for the popular annual Evesham Angling Festival.

The Hobgoblin Evesham Championship final is the headline event tomorrow and invites 35 of the nation’s top anglers.

It pits them against 35 qualifiers on the River Avon and carries a top prize of £3,000.

“It’s great news,” said festival director Roger Mortimer of the involvement of the Wychwood Brewery beer brand.

“Three years ago we added a beer and cider festival to the weekend’s attractions, so getting a headliner from that field to support the action is a real coup.

“This year’s event will see all the members of the England national sides taking part on a river that’s been fishing very well during the qualifying events.”

The Wychavon Championships final is on Sunday with the Match Fishing Team Championships running on Monday.

The festival at Crown Meadow, hosted by David Hall Publishing, regularly attracts bumper crowds of spectators with a number of stalls and other entertainment on hand as well as the country’s top anglers.

Draws are at 8.30am with fishing from 11am until 4pm.
