HISTORY-makers Great Britain women’s wheelchair basketball team missed on a medal at the Rio Paralympics as they were overpowered by Netherlands.

The side, who train at the University of Worcester Arena, proved no match for the dominant Dutch who ran out 76-34 winners to clinch bronze.

The results ends a memorable tournament for the team who became the first British female wheelchair basketball side to reach the last four.

City students Sophie Carrigill, Jude Hamer and Leah Evans helped their country to victories over Argentina, reigning Paralympic champions Germany and hosts Brazil in the group stages before beating China 57-38 in the quarter-final on Tuesday.

But Great Britain came unstuck in the semi-final, losing 89-76 to USA, and were soundly beaten by Netherlands in the bronze medal match.
