WORCESTER Wanderers beat higher-ranked Bridgnorth 22-19 in the North Midlands Cup quarter-finals.

Head coach Jon Perks named a full-strength side against the promoted National League Three Midlands outfit at Weston's Fields.

Wanderers had drawn and lost to Bridgnorth last season and the challenge ignited the hosts, who put together a solid first half.

Dave Whiting, who was later lost to injury, scored his second try in two weeks.

His strong physical presence was too much for Bridgnorth, while Tom Biggs pulled the strings and added the conversion.

Worcester’s second try was a fine piece of individual skill and vision from wing Mike Croad as he kicked ahead and powered past retreating defenders to score.

Bridgnorth were not at their best but came out determined in the second half and put the pressure on with two quick tries.

Wanderers were hit by four yellow cards but Croad scored the decisive try after a fine break by Oli Meadows.

Players like Scott Pock and Alex Peel, who both had to play in unfamiliar positions at times, typified the team spirit.
