FOURTH-choice hooker Matti Williams needs “more time to hone his game”, according to Worcester Warriors head coach Carl Hogg.

South Africa-born Williams is a “longer-term project” for Warriors and “needs a bit more development”.

The 25-year-old has played 12 minutes of Premiership rugby since arriving from Northampton Saints in the summer.

He is behind Belfast-born Niall Annett, Georgian international Jaba Bregvadze and England under 20s international Jack Singleton in Worcester’s pecking order.

“Matti is a young player coming through and needs a bit more development and time in the saddle,” explained Hogg.

“He is a converted back rower to hooker so just needs a bit more time to hone his game around the scrum and line-out throwing.

“He is very much a development player for us. We always knew he was going to be a longer-term project and that is part and parcel of what we do at Warriors."

Williams, who started off as a flanker, has played 148 minutes across seven first-team matches for Warriors.

Known as a quick runner and strong in the loose, Williams made his first-team debut for Northampton in November 2013.

However, he suffered a broken leg on his Premiership debut for Saints against London Irish in his first season.

The hooker returned to make seven top-flight appearances at Franklin’s Gardens.

Hogg believes Williams is making progress at Warriors and highlighted the development of highly-rated props Nick Schonert and Val Ruskin Ruskin who have 59 Premiership appearances between them.

He added: “People were asking exactly the same questions about Schonert or Ruskin two years ago yet they are now fully-fledged Premiership players and playing outstandingly.

“You cannot just throw players into the Premiership and let them sink or swim. It’s very much about chartering their development through a period of time.”
