PERSHORE Town won 4-3 at Nuneaton Griff in Midland League Division One to end a run of six consecutive defeats in the competition that had dragged them towards the relegation zone.

The spirited, well-deserved victory should have been by a bigger margin.

Having fallen behind early on, Town equalised after 30 minutes when Will Stallard’s ball to the far post was headed back by Luke Church for Ben Lane to finish from close range on the volley.

Fifth-from-bottom Town went ahead just before half-time when debutant Reece Jacobs created space and shot into the far corner.

Pershore dominated the second half and could have extended the lead through chances falling to Jacobs and Church.

But the hosts equalised after 70 minutes from a deflected free-kick.

Jacobs scored his second only two minutes later, heading in from a corner, and Church finished off a good flowing move on 78 minutes for Town’s fourth goal.

The game ended in controversy after a dubious penalty was awarded to Nuneaton and scored in the 90th minute, resulting in player-manager Quentin Townsend receiving a red card.

Bromsgrove Sporting kept up their leadership of Division One with a 2-1 win at Hinckley AFC through Jason Cowley and Reece Hewitt.

They have a The Buildbase FA Vase fifth round home match with Bristol Manor Farm on Saturday, January 28, after winning 4-0 at Watford side Sun Sports at the previous stage.

Premier Division leaders Alvechurch were held 2-2 at Heanor Town with Daniel Dubidat and Ryan Edmunds scoring.

Church host Westfields tomorrow night in the Polymac Packaging League Cup second round (7.45pm).

Aaron Lloyd was among the scorers as Stourport Swifts drew 2-2 with Long Eaton United.

Droitwich Spa boosted their Division Two promotion hopes with a 4-3 home win over Knowle.

Nick Seabourne (2), Luke Molloy and Haydn Morris were on target.

Spa moved to within six points of leaders Alvis Sporting Club but having played two games more.

Feckenham crashed 6-2 at Coton Green.
