MANAGER Steve Winfield says he is “very confident” Callow End can end their long wait for the league title after doing the double over their closest rivals.

The leaders secured a 2-1 win at second-placed Hallow to move three points clear at the top of the McDonald’s Worcester and District League Sunday Premier Division.

Winfield believes the result has put his team, who also have two games in hand on Hallow, in a “good place” as they look to extend their nine-match unbeaten record and strengthen their position at the summit.

“It was a great win for us,” said Winfield whose side opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to Jon Murphy and James Smith before Shaquille Tulloch pulled one back for hosts Hallow.

“I was a bit nervous towards the end when they scored but even at that stage we still looked quite comfortable so we are really happy.”

Since finishing bottom of the division at the end of the 2010-11 campaign, Callow End have steadily improved their position to become serial title challengers.

They were agonisingly denied the crown by one point last season despite seeing off eventual champions Hallow home and away.

But Winfield firmly believes Callow End can go one step further this term as they prepare to take on mid-table Worcester Saints at Lower Ferry Lane tomorrow (10.30am).

“We are very confident now,” he said.“We have worked really hard and are all very proud of what we have done so far so we just want to keep it going.

“It has been a journey since we got together about five years ago and that’s probably why it means so much more to us.

“There have been times when it has been really tough but bit by bit over the seasons we have got better and better.

“We probably should have won it last year but we have gone to another level this season so hopefully we can win it. We have beaten Hallow twice now so that has put us in a good place.”
