STEVE Baylis took the overall honours in the Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park winter league.

He scored 191 points at the Worcester course over seven rounds to finish well ahead of final-stage winner Norman Vernalls on 183 and Steve Williams on 182.

The scores from the best five rounds counted and consistency was key through some tough conditions.

Vernalls pushed Baylis hard on the final day but could not quite make up enough ground.

He returned 40 points to take the seventh round by two after starting with a birdie and then dropping in seven pars in total.

Vernalls faltered a little on the back nine but won ahead of Tom Jenkins on 38 and his handicap was reduced from 16 to 15.

Jenkins (9 handicap) managed nine pars and one birdie on the 18th but will rue his six single-point holes and lack of consistency.

He needed countback to grab the place ahead of Baylis (7) who carded birdies on the second, ninth and 11th alongside seven pars.

Baylis left too many shots out on the course but still claimed the league overall.

Richard Palfrey (20) took fourth place with 37 on countback ahead of tied finisher Kevin Hill as 33 players contested the round.

Trying medal playing conditions made for a high-scoring contest involving 24 golfers.

Only winner Barrie Hope (7) matched nett par for the course after returning 69.

Thirteen pars set things up but two bogies on the front nine and two double bogies on the back nine could have thwarted his run for victory.

Peter Brown (18) took second with 70 ahead of Mick Huggins (18) on 71 and Bill Kelly (21) on 72 as Phil Lane was nudged out on countback.
