INTERIM boss John Snape “deserves” to become Worcester City’s permanent manager, according to full-back Tyler Weir.

City have been searching for Carl Heeley’s successor since he ended his seven-year tenure late last month.

Snape, who was Heeley’s assistant, has been in temporary charge but ruled himself out of the running, insisting he wanted a “new face at the helm”.

However, Weir believes Snape has proven his managerial credentials and would be a “great” appointment for struggling City.

“I don’t think Snapper wants it but all the boys are behind him and I would love it if he got the job,” Weir said.

“The fans don’t know what he is putting in behind the scenes because he loves Worcester City and if he got the job he would deserve it as far as I am concerned.

“It would be great for the club.”

Snape, a former Hereford United and City midfielder, has previously managed now-defunct Bromsgrove Rovers.

Captain Danny Jackman, who has expressed his desire to “one day” manage his home club, has been working alongside Snape.

Since coming together as a temporary management team City have drawn 1-1 with Tamworth, lost 3-0 at Harrogate Town and 2-1 to FC Halifax Town last Saturday.

They have fallen into the drop zone after a 13-match winless streak in National League North.

“Danny is helping him out but Snapper is doing a lot,” Weir said.

“I can call him up at 10pm and he will answer the phone if I need to chat.

“He has done a lot for me personally and for the club and I think all the boys would love it if he stayed on.

“It has been disappointing because since Snapper has been here we have lost two and drawn one. But we are working hard and have been unlucky.

“We are all committed and have got to give a lot of credit to Snapper as he has done a lot of work.

“It is going to be hard but if we go into every game like we did last Saturday we have got a chance.”

Worcester travel to bottom club Altrincham tomorrow (3pm) in a must-win game for both sides as they aim to avoid the drop.

However, City are without the long-serving Weir who is suspended after being sent off against Halifax.

“I am gutted as that is a game I really wanted to play in. It is a six-pointer down the bottom,” he said.

“It would be massive if we could win it. At the minute things aren’t going for us but if we play like we did last Saturday every week things will change.

“If I’d stayed on and we had 11 on the pitch we would have got something out of that game.

“We are doing well but are conceding goals and my discipline wasn’t great which has let the team down unfortunately.”
