Two poor penalty misses from Ryan Mills cost us a bonus point. I'm a fan of Mills but a consistent kicker is a priority. We weren't great but still should've got something out of it. Bring on Bristol.

Tactically, it was the worst performance of the season. Really turgid stuff and made us the masters of our own downfall. There is not one player in our team that I’d say whose strong point is his kicking. The weakest thing about us as a team is our defence. There are many players that I would say their main strength is running with the ball in hand. Do we really think a kicking game-plan is for us?

We kicked directly into touch too many times - aerial ping-pong by Mills. In the last 10 minutes we remembered to hold on to the ball and drove forward and scored. The 60 minutes in between were full of errors and no game-plan as we did the opposite of Northampton. We lost a game we could have won.

Francois Hougaard was outstanding again and I thought our defence was improved from previous games, especially when defending on our own line. Saints’ dominance in the scrum and our missed penalties were the major difference.

First try was good, so was the last. Pity about the rest (95% of the match) in the middle. You couldn't fault the effort. Northampton didn't play particularly well, and their supporters around us were apoplectic at times. The low spot was turning over the ball on their line when it would have been easier to score. Bryce Heem looked the best player on the pitch and was everywhere in defence and attack. The heads didn't go down.

I can't help but think we could have got more out of the match. Saints kicked better and got after our line-out but they didn't have much else.

We will see whether the kicking game keeps us up and if it does then brilliant. But it seems clear that our strength is our runners and even more abundantly clear it very much isn't our tactical and territorial kicking. It is playing to our weakness not our strengths. It worked against Saracens because Mills kicked his goals and Sarries made error after error, giving us back possession and territory. We then got smashed by Exeter and were well beaten against a poor Northampton team.
