DIRECTOR of rugby Adam Drew admits he and his Droitwich players are still pinching themselves after moving within one victory of realising their Twickenham dream.

The Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground side clinched the RFU Midlands Senior Vase on Saturday following a 24-7 final win at county rivals Evesham.

They will now host Lancashire outfit Tarleton in the national semi-finals on April 15 which Drew believes will be the “biggest moment” in the club’s 45-year history.

“We are thrilled,” said Drew whose side secured victory at Albert Road thanks to tries from Matt Hanrahan, Aron Middleton and Bobby Scott-Walker.

“We have worked really hard to get to this point and it was always going to be a needle match against Evesham due to the local rivalry.

“We got the win in the end but full praise to Evesham. I thought they were outstanding.

“They had quite a few injuries during the course of the game which disrupted their momentum.

“But they stuck with it and played full-on rugby for 80 minutes which was incredible.”

League champions Droitwich are on the crest of a wave having won all 18 of their Midlands Three West (South) matches this season ahead of Saturday's visit to Old Wheatleyans.

And Drew said he “can’t wait” to tackle Tarleton who lead the way in Lancashire (North) with 18 straight wins.

“It has been a very good run and we are still pinching ourselves to a degree,” Drew continued.

“But I am going to start to do my homework on Tarleton.

“I never like to think about games too far in advance but we know we are one step closer to the Twickenham gates.

“Some of the lads will never get the opportunity again and I think that will reflect in our performance when we play Tarleton. We will be ready for them.”

Drew said it would “mean everything” to not only the club but also the town to see Droitwich play at the 82,000-capacity stadium.

“It is a great achievement for the club to get this far,” he said. “But to get to Twickenham would be great for the club and everyone in the town.

“Undoubtedly it (the match against Tarleton) will be the biggest moment in Droitwich Rugby Club’s life so I am really looking forward to the challenge. I can’t wait.”
