WORCESTER Raiders are set to come up against two former Aston Villa favourites in the Worcestershire FA Junior Cup final on Saturday (2pm).

Midfielder Lee Hendrie and striker Julian Joachim will look to lead Badsey-based Montpellier to glory at Pershore Town’s King George V Stadium.

But Raiders chairman Kevin Jenkins insists his side are keen to “prove a point” and remain “confident” of clinching the title.

Hendrie made more than 250 appearances for Villa between 1994 and 2007 and won his sole England cap in 1998.

Since stepping into non-league football in 2011 the 39-year-old has played for a host of clubs, including Kidderminster Harriers and Redditch United.

Last summer Hendrie helped form Montpellier who are currently second in Midland League Division Three.

The team also boast 42-year-old striker Joachim who made his name at Villa and had spells at Leicester City, Coventry City and Leeds United. Jenkins said Raiders’ players were looking forward to testing themselves against players who once graced the Premier League.

“I am a Villa fan so I used to go and watch Hendrie and Joachim play,” Jenkins said.

“It will be a good test for the lads. Our captain Joel Hobbs, who plays at centre-half, can’t wait. He wants to prove a point against them.

“We are on a good roll and are confident with the way we are playing so I can’t see there being too much of a problem.”

Raiders, managed by Karl Gormley, are also fuelled by the disappointment of losing last year’s final to Droitwich Spa.

The Claines Lane outfit got their revenge in the semi-final as they came from 3-0 down to claim a dramatic 4-3 victory over Spa.

Jenkins said Raiders, who are fourth in West Midlands League Division One and beat second-placed Newport Town 3-2 last Saturday, were desperate to go “one step further” this year.

“It was very difficult to lose last year,” Jenkins said.

“We came back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 but then they got a penalty in the last minute which killed us. This year’s final is at the same venue as well so let’s try to go one step further this time.

“We are doing well in the league which is really good as that is our main priority.

“But the county cup has always been something we want.

“Traditionally we have won something every year. We have won eight cups in seven seasons and want to keep that going.

“I have been to see Montpellier play and they have got some good players. But we have identified their weaknesses so we have got a plan and are going to give everything we have got to win.”
