“LIGHTNING-quick” wing Josh Adams is “ready” to play for Wales, according to Warriors director of rugby Gary Gold.

Adams has scored four tries in their last four Aviva Premiership games with two coming in their 40-33 defeat at Wasps last Sunday.

He has climbed to the top of Worcester’s try-scoring standings this season having crossed the whitewash 12 times in 21 appearances.

Gold reckons the 21-year-old, who has represented his country at under 20s level, could be “in the mix” for Wales’ tour of the Pacific Islands this summer.

Wales, who finished second from bottom in the Six Nations, tackle Tonga at Eden Park and Samoa at Apia Park in June.

With many of their leading players expected to be on the British and Irish Lions’ tour of New Zealand Gold said it creates a “huge opportunity” for Adams to potentially make his mark.

Gold also backed Worcester’s 24-year-old lock Will Spencer to get called up by England for their two tests against Argentina in June.

“A lot of the focus is going to be on the Lions,” Gold said.

“I am sure the respective countries will also want to rest one or two players who have had very long seasons.

“So what a wonderful opportunity for you to blood a few youngsters and get them to understand what international rugby is all about by giving them a chance on the big stage.

“You’ve got guys like Will for England and Josh for Wales so there are huge opportunities for the respective coaches.”

Gold said Adams, who joined Warriors’ academy from Llanelli Scarlets in 2015 after impressing in the World Rugby Under 20 Championship, had “come on in leaps and bounds”.

Last season the talented back continued his development in a loan spell with Cinderford while scoring for Worcester Cavaliers.

After coming on as a replacement for Dean Hammond at Bath in September Swansea-born Adams has not looked back.

His performances in the Anglo-Welsh Cup saw him get shortlisted for the competition’s breakthrough award.

“Josh has come on in leaps and bounds,” Gold said. “Obviously when Chris Pennell was away he played at full-back for us and covered us well there as he has electrifying pace from the back.

“He is lightning-quick. If you remember his try here against Exeter when we turned the ball over and he bolted from the back he has got pace to burn.

“He is also a good defender and chases kicks really well so he is coming on.

“It would be great to see him potentially in the mix for Wales for the summer tour.

“I think he is ready now. If you are good enough you are old enough and he is good enough.

“He has worked really hard on his game and his core skills this year and I am really chuffed with the way he has come on so I think he is ready to go on the summer tour.”
