RAVENMEADOW and Perdiswell Park seniors got their season under way with a mixed match for the Sherdwell Cup in Tewkesbury at Sherdons.

It was the first time the ladies and men from the newly-united Worcester golf club had played together as a team.

The cup is played for twice yearly and Sherdons ended the silverware’s 18-month stay in Worcester at least until October by winning 5-3 on a sunny day with a cool breeze.

Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park’s seniors captain Jan Schutte and Jane Brinsford won 3&2, Mick Huggins and Jane Rowland 4&3 and Steve Bellinger and Sue Clissett 5&4.

Phil Lane and Sue Price lost 4&3, Ed Nicklin and Kate Ingles 6&5, Ron Gilbert and Mary Bendall 5&4, Norman Vernalls and Jane Wood 4&3 and Roger Savage and Virginia Blythe 4&3.

Hosts Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park beat Ombersley 2-1 in the Daily Mail Foursomes competition.

Vernalls (16 handicao) and Huggins (19) saw off Maurice Candlin (7) and Simon Kelly (6) in the second round.

Collis Fisher won the summer league’s second round of seven with 63 nett after using a 28 handicap to his advantage.

Club captain Steve Baylis (8) was second with 64 as he edged out the third-placed Huggins (19) and Lane (16) in fourth on countback.

Of the 44 players 14 brought home scores of nett par or better for the course.

Thirty-one players went out to play for the medal on a bright but cool and breezy morning in Worcester.

But only seven of the participants managed to break nett par or better for the course.

Barrie Hope (8) won with 66 nett followed by David Brace (26) on 66, Baylis (8) on 67 and Lane (16) on 67.
