OMBERSLEY won a thrilling Williamson Trophy second-round tie with local rivals Kidderminster by losing less wickets.

An exciting match went to the last ball with Kidderminster requiring one run for victory but they finished on 183-9 from 40 overs in reply to 183-6.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field before a steady start by Ombersley produced 37 runs in the first 10 overs.

Dominic D’Oliveira (13) was bowled by Liam Weston and a stand of 60 between Nick Hammond and Liam Gwynne (48) ended when debutant wicketkeeper Rob Cross stumped the latter off Charlie Stainforth.

The score progressed from 97-2 to 125-4 with former Worcestershire all-rounder Gareth Andrew (20) caught by Josh Tidmarsh off Stainforth.

Kidderminster took the next three wickets for just 36 runs on 148, 154 and 161 by the 36th over.

Oliver Uffindall (9) was caught by Worcestershire's Pat Brown off Richard Kimberlin, Godfrey Lamb caught Hammond (45) off Liam Weston and Ted Baylis (5) run out by bowler Brown.

Ombersley scored 21 more runs with Andrew Robertson (14) and Simon Harwood (7) the not out batsmen.

Weston took 2-29, Stainforth 2-36 and Kimberlin 1-16.

Half of the Kidderminster team were not usually in the first XI but showed they have plenty of ability.

Only three batsmen reached double figures but the young players will have benefited from playing in such a close encounter.

The higher-scoring batsmen were skipper Neil Pinner (30), ex-Worcester player Weston (20) and their man of the match Connor Smith (78).

Smith struck six fours and a six before being run out by former Kidderminster player Baylis.

Uffindal took 3-25 from six overs with Arti Fiaz, Robertson and Neil Slade getting one wicket each.

The Birmingham League season starts on Saturday with Kidderminster visiting Walsall and Ombersley going to Kenilworth Wardens in the Premier Division (both noon).
