WORCESTER crews dominated the Abingdon rowing meeting.

They headed to sunny Oxfordshire to compete in two-kilometre time trials.

Following a highly successful 2016 that saw the women win at Henley they proved the squad coached by Aidan Melarkey are still in top form for the coming season.

Their eight not only won the event but picked up the Buckler Cup for being the fastest boat of the day.

Vicky Thomas, Sarah Reed, Anna Singleton, Lucy Powell, Libby Johnston, Cath Jackson, Elly Foulds, Fay Sheppard and cox molly Elkins made up the group.

Sheppard and Johnston then jumped into a coxless pair for division two and claimed a win, beating several of the men’s crews with their time.

For the men old club hands Dominic O’Loghlin and equine vet Andy Harrison pulled off a win in the masters category, beating a couple of crews from the Army.

Worcester juniors did a sterling job and Tim Eiler won the J16 boy’s event as well as the Pete Burton Trophy for fastest junior sculler of the day ahead of older competitors.

Eiler was also third fastest of 18 in the senior adult times and is tipped to impress further this season.

The J15 double scull had a solid row, landing second behind hosts Abingdon.

The J16 quadruple scull not only won their race category but also picked up the Milton Challenge Cup for being the fastest girls’ junior boat of the meeting.

Alisha Bull, Daisy Price, Elizabeth Shaw and Becky Silvester made up the crew.

Juniors’ coach Jas Hale said: “It was a very proud moment to be a Worcester member at the prize-giving ceremony.”
