WORCESTER racer Liam Turberfield returned from Oulton Park with a second place to lie in a comfortable runners-up spot in the North Gloucester Road Racing Championship.

In the pre-injection 700 class in Cheshire Turberfield had been surprised to discover his finish in the top two in the championship race.

The St John's competitor admitted: "I got shuffled backwards a bit and was getting angry watching the winners clear off while I picked my way back through the pack.

"I got a bit greedy into one corner and had to pull out or I would have crashed.

"I had to use track run off, lost six places and was lying about ninth in the race.

"I settled down and accepted the win was gone but did my best to get a good result.

"I picked the rivals off one by one and before I knew it the chequered flag was out.

"I thought I was in the top four and was satisfied with my riding. Then when I got the results I had in fact finished second for a great result.

"Unfortunately for one of my rivals he had a bike problem and pulled out early on without me knowing."

Turberfield had finished third in race one when his left handle bar came loose after leading for three laps.

The next meeting is at Donington Park on May 13 and 14.
