THE three top players were tied on 65 nett in Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park Golf Club's Presidents Trophy second round.

Countback eventually gave the win to Mike Williams who carded 31 on the back nine but still found himself tied with Mick Huggins and Brian Hodgetts.

Analysis of the back six holes finally separated the tied trio with Williams’ 18 earning him the win.

He carded a birdie on the 15th to bolster his three pars but the 21-handicapper did well to avoid too many double bogies or worse.

Williams returned just two doubles on the way out and a triple on the 11th.

Huggins (17 handicap) sat on the leading score for some time as one of the early starters.

But he eventually held on to second by virtue of his back nine 31 which bettered Hodgetts’ 32 over the same holes.

A birdie on the third and a strong finish with five pars over the last six holes and just two double bogies on the front nine set the day’s target.

Hodgetts (20) tried hard to spoil the party when he too came in with 65 after downing seven pars and using his shots in hand well to bring him into the mix late on.

Three double bogies or worse left him in the pack rather than leading it.

Janet Richardson (36) was the sole lady participating and handed in 68 to finish fourth as one of just six players to record nett par or better for the Worcester course.

Williams and Huggins received handicap cuts to 20 and 16 respectively.

Barry Warner (17) posted 61 nett to win round three of the club's summer league.

Birdies on the 11th, 13th and 16th and eight pars elsewhere helped take him ahead of the early leaders.

Holding on to a 32 at the turn Warner finished well, recording just 29 on the back nine although a quadruple bogey on the 17th was added to two doubles on the way out.

After sitting in pole position Julian Bateman (14) had to be content with second after he finished on 62.

He dropped in birdies on the sixth and ninth along with nine pars and only came to grief on the eighth where he succumbed to a triple bogey.

Kieran Sherlock (14) continued his good form to post 63 to take third on countback ahead of tied finisher Kevin Hill (18).

Sixteen of the 40 players returned scores of nett par or better for the course.

Warner, Bateman and Sherlock had their handicaps cut to 16, 13 and 13 respectively.
