WORCESTER Sixth Form College student Emily Burton won an age group gold medal at the ETU European Duathlon Championships in Spain.

Burton was crowned champion in the women's 18 to 19 year section in three hours 29 minutes and 46 seconds despite tackling treacherous conditions.

The 18-year-old will represent Great Britain in August's World Championships in Canada before embarking on a degree in sports journalism at the University of Gloucestershire.

Eight hundred athletes competed in the European event in Soria, Spain, which consisted of a 10-kilometre and 5km run sandwiching a 40km bike section through mountainous terrain.

They had to contend with rain, hail and gale-force winds and the slippery course made it difficult for Burton, of Besford near Pershore, to stay upright on her bike.

On finishing the stage she had to empty the water out of her trainers before embarking on the run to the finish.

Burton, who is studying A-levels in English language, media studies and physical education, said: “Representing your country is an incredible honour but winning a gold medal for your country is something so special and something most people can only dream of.

"Standing on top of the podium was an incredible feeling and slightly overwhelming reflecting on the journey I’ve had to get there.

“The European championships were my starting point for the 2017 season. I am taking a bit of a break from competing in the next few months as I have my exams to concentrate on.

"It has been difficult to balance training and studying but all of my teachers have been extremely supportive.

"Once my exams are over training and competing will be my main focus until I go off to university in September.”

Burton was the youngest competitor in the World Triathlon Series for GB in 2015 at the age of 16 after taking up endurance sport due to her interest in long-distance running and swimming.

The former St Mary’s School pupil has since enjoyed world success abroad at under 18s and under 23s level.
