JACK Mackintosh claimed five wickets as Barnards Green defied the weather and the odds to beat Shifnal in a low-scoring game.

The visitors appeared to be in the driving seat in the Birmingham League Division One encounter when they reduced the hosts to 123-9.

But Mackintosh stole the show, recording figures of 5-28, as Green skittled their opponents for 84 and moved up to second in the league.

On a damp day, it was no surprise Shifnal chose to bowl after winning the toss. Alex Wyatt trapped Ryan Tongue (9) LBW and Adam Dovey (8) shortly followed, given out caught behind by keeper Anthony Parker off James Edwards.

With Green on 18-2, Olly Swift and Josh Haynes battled hard on a difficult wicket and had taken their side to 48 when the latter was clean bowled for 15 by Alex Riley.

The match was interrupted by rain for the second time to see it reduced to 35 overs-a-side. Phil Harris and Swift gradually upped the run rate, but Jack McIver took two quick wickets. Firstly, Harris (28) holed out to Ross Aucott before Swift (30) was trapped LBW.

Kev Golder (7) was bowled by James Edwards and 116-6 then became 119-9 with three quick wickets for Charlie Home.

Will Dovey (13) was caught behind, Ash Brewer (2) was trapped LBW and Jon Dovey was bowled without scoring.

After the Duckworth Lewis Method increased Shifnal’s target to 126 to win, Green knew they had to be at the top of their game. Harris struck first when Steve Leach was dismissed for dislodging a bail with his bat in an attempt to stop the ball. Home then became Mackintosh’s first victim. Connor Dudley fired two big sixes, but it was his aggressive style which led to his dismissal when he hit a ball from Jon Dovey straight to Ryan Tongue at mid-wicket. His 28 came off just 22 balls.

Ross Aucott was bowled by Blair Kingsland to leave Shifnal wavering on 60-4.

After some accurate bowling, Kingsland was rewarded with a second wicket as McIver was clean bowled for 18.

But it was Mackintosh’s second spell which changed the game. He grabbed three wickets in two overs as Shifnal crumbled.

Edwards holed out to Jon Dovey at backward square before Mackintosh clean bowled both Chris Murrell (8) and then Anthony Parker without scoring.

Shifnal were 79-8 and still needed 47 to win with nine overs remaining.

But Green, who visit Walmley on Saturday (noon) finished the job as Tongue dismissed Harry Chandler and Mackintosh bowled Alex Riley.
