BROADWAS Croquet Club's Federation League moved into the next round of the Secretary's Shield.
They travelled to the neutral ground of Nottingham to win 4-3 against Hunstanton in the competition involving winners of last year's regional leagues.
The singles games were shared with Jeremy Pardoe beating David Haslam 26-12 and John Evans losing to Pete Brown 26-7.
But the doubles narrowly went to Broadwas thanks to Stuart Smith and Janet Bedford defeating Bryan Saddington and Charles Ostler 20-17.
Back to singles Bedford lost 26-8 to Ostler and Pardoe fell 26-20 to Brown but Evans easily beat Haslam 26-10.
The final match was a nail-biter and could have gone either way but Smith held his nerve against the Norfolk club.
He clinched his game 26-20 and the match with a 15-yard shot which hit the post, bringing a jubilant Broadwas team to their feet.
