WORCESTER St John’s Cycling Club carried on their summer’s tally of near-record times in mostly favourable weather conditions.

The club’s Vince Page and his wife Sarah organised a popular League of Veteran Racing Cyclists criterium race at the Stourport Sports Club cycle track.

Meanwhile, time trialists battled it out on a fast 25-mile course at the Bynea Open in south Wales.

The first race at Stourport was for the over 55s category with Saints members Catherine Coley and Andrea Turner flying the club colours with the latter in her first group race.

Within a few laps the race split into two groups with Coley in the leading group and Turner in the second.

This was how it stayed until the prime mid-race prize which Coley won before Andy Jones from Wolverhampton Wheelers attacked and shortly after Clevedon District Road Club’s Tommy Barlow chased him.

Jones held on for the win while Barlow held the group off for second and Coley won the sprint for third from the rest of the group.

Turner lost contact with the second group with just a few laps to go.

Race two was for over 40s to 55 years.

Club stalwarts Vince Page and Adrian Bird rode for Saints.

The pace was fast from the start but the bunch stayed together until Steve Minton from Ludlow Brewery Race Team got away on his own.

Despite pressure from the bunch he stayed away for a well-deserved win.

Page sprinted well to take fourth and win his age category with Bird just behind in sixth.

At Bynea Simon Garrett enjoyed a 97-second personal best with 52 minutes 13 seconds while Ed Dursley rode 56.11 for a 90-second PB and Simon Adcook did 56.22.

Worcestershire rider Simon Wix also did 54.10.

The event was won by James Rix from Crawley Wheelers in 48.18.

There were light rain showers throughout the event and riders had to deal with a strong 15mph headwind for the first 14 miles.

But they benefitted from an equally strong tailwind for the last 11 miles.
